How to play
Players improvise a scene. Creating characters and relationships without drama or conflict. The characters can by typical telenovela characters or just characters. The characters could speak with a Spanish accent or not, it’s up to you.
From time to time the bell will ring. When the bell rings, two of the players kiss or slap.
We like to give the bell to an audience member. It’s fun.
Notes
At the beginning of the scene focus on developing relationships. Start as if it’s a normal day doing ordinary things; two people folding laundry or two friends having coffee or a couple of people in a doctor’s waiting room.
This game is similar to the game “Justify the Sound” where the musical improviser or sound improviser play sounds throughout a scene and the improvisers must incorporate the sound offers and justify them in the context of the scene.
Also similar to “Soap Opera.”
Variation
Give the bell to an audience member and let him or her call for the ‘action’.
This variation comes to us from Kelly Agathos from ImproBubble in Brussels. Choose an audience member or two to shout out “Telenovela” from time to time instead of ringing a bell.
