How to Play
Players improvise a scene while carrying around bottles of water. From time to time the players take a mouthful of water and spray out the water in response to something another players says. This is a spit take.
Note
Keep the lips pressed tightly together to really spray the water in the air. Have towels on hand to clear up the water and make the stage safe from slips.
Yes, it gets messy. It’s possible that not everyone wants to play this game (get wet). The spit takes can be a bit aggressive.
Do a YouTube search for ‘spit take’ and you’ll find lots of them. They can be really fun to do and to receive.
The spit take is a big reaction…which is a key component of all improv. The audience looks for reaction, this guarantees it.
Origin
I learned this game from Christian Utzman (pictured) of The Un-Scripted Theater Company. And recently saw it during a Theatresports match at BATS Improv… it is a crowd favorite.
