Instant Improv Workshop
The Playbook lists all 370 Performance Games by category. [Group, Physical Restriction, Fill in the Blank, etc.]
This means that when you organize a class or workshop you can choose a category of games that will allow you to teach the skills you want.
Choose a category
For example a teacher might want to work on Narrative [Story Telling]. So s/he would go to the Category Index look up “narrative” and find 33 performance games. The games range from Bedtime Story to Word-at-a Time Narrator. All of these games allow the workshop instructor to emphasize story telling in improvisation and the students get to do different games. So they all have a sense of discovery and play.
Other categories include Culture, Endowment, Group, Justification, Music, Using the audience, Physical Restriction, Verbal Restrictions and more.
Long form improv formats too
Find long form improv formats to challenge your group. Create a full length improvised story with the structured included in the Playbook. Including The Harold and the very popular Super Scene.
Notes, Interview, A book list and more
The book is packed with the most valuable things for teachers, players and companies. There is even a section on how to start your own improv group. Every section is a potential topic for an improv workshop.
Inspiration
On almost every page you’ll find an inspirational quote about improvisation and the creative process. Here is the quote on page 30
A good idea is one that takes you forward, a bad idea is one that leads you nowhere. -Keith Johnstone
That idea seems obvious to us but often we can defend an idea that simply does not take the story forward. Taking the action forward often involves inspiring your scene partner to contribute to the development of the story. When they don’t contribute …it may be easy to put the blame on them…but it’s more helpful to focus on improving our ability to inspire others.
